Ultrasound Scans Available at 'Insight' - BMI
Sarum Road Hospital:
Fetal Viability / Assessment
/ Dating Scan (after 6 weeks gestation):
This scan is
performed to confirm that your pregnancy has got off to a good start
and will offer reassurance that you have not miscarried. It will also
confirm the number of pregnancies that you are carrying (i.e. a single
baby, twins) and can be used to determine the gestation (number of weeks)
of the pregnancy accurately and hence your estimated due date. This
is very important in planning the future management and investigation
of your pregnancy.
It is usually
possible to obtain the appropriate view of your baby by scanning through
your tummy. Otherwise an internal scan may be recommended, during which
a small ultrasound probe is placed just inside the vagina. This method
of scanning gives the clearest views of the pregnancy in its early stages.
(This procedure is generally found to be less uncomfortable than having
a cervical smear performed and is perfectly safe for your pregnancy.)
Nuchal
Translucency Scan (11 - 13 weeks Gestation):
This is a scan
performed to assess the risk of your pregnancy being affected by Down's
syndrome, other chromosomal abnormalities and major heart defects. It
involves the measurement of a collection of fluid at the back of your
baby's neck. The larger this measurement is, the greater the risk
that your baby may have one of these problems. The test will provide
you with a risk, or probability, based on your age and the ultrasound
measurement. On the basis of this you can then decide if you wish to
consider an invasive test, which will prove whether your baby has normal
chromosomes, or an abnormality like Downs syndrome. It is therefore
critical to realise that this test alone does not tell you definitely
whether or not your baby has any of these conditions. This scan may
be performed either through your tummy or internally depending upon
the quality of the image which can be obtained.
A Normal Nuchal Fold Scan
The Combined
Test (11 - 13 weeks gestation):
This test combines
the Nuchal scan, as described above, with a blood test to measure the
concentration of substances in your blood which are known to be altered
in Down's syndrome pregnancies. Again, the result of this test is
a risk or probability rather than a definite answer. The final result
of this test will not be available on the day of the test as the blood
sample has to be sent away to a laboratory to be analysed. We will aim
to give you the final result within 72 hours of the test. The advantage
of this test over the Nuchal scan on its own is that it is has a higher
Down's syndrome detection rate (85% compared with 71%) with a lower
risk of giving you a misleading result (1.9% compared with 2.4%).
Additional
benefits of having an early pregnancy ultrasound scan:
Having a scan
performed in the early stages of your pregnancy offers several advantages
in addition to giving you the option of having Down's syndrome screening.
As well as dating your pregnancy accurately and confirming that it is
progressing well it will also rule out many of the major structural
abnormalities which would otherwise only be detected by the routine
anomaly ultrasound scan at around 20 weeks. If you are unlucky enough
to have suffered a 'silent' miscarriage (approximately 2% of pregnancies
at this gestation) it will also enable this to be diagnosed at an earlier
stage rather than awaiting the onset of bleeding which can be very distressing.
If you are carrying a twin pregnancy it will also enable determination
of whether the twins are identical or not, which is critical to the
safe management of the remainder of your pregnancy.
Fetal
Anomaly Scan (19 - 24 weeks):
This is the
main 'routine' pregnancy ultrasound scan and is preformed to check
that the baby's organs are developing correctly and are in the right
place. Particular attention is paid to the head and brain, spine, heart,
stomach and tummy wall, kidneys, bladder and limbs. The position of
the afterbirth will also be determined as this may have an influence
on your management later on in the pregnancy.
Fetal Facial Profile
Fetal Nose & Lips Fetal Fingers
Fetal
Sexing Scan (19 - 24 weeks):
Determination
of the sex of your baby is possible using ultrasound. This service will
be offered only as a part of a fetal assessment scan or as part of a
fetal anomaly scan as detailed above. We would aim to be correct in
around 99% of cases.
Invasive
Testing:
Should your
ultrasound scan not provide you with a reassuring result or if the Consultant
is concerned about your baby's appearance you may be offered a test
to confirm that your baby has normal genes or chromosomes. i.e. that
the pregnancy is not affected by Down's syndrome or any of the other
significant genetic abnormalities. This test may be Chorionic Villus
Sampling (CVS), which is performed after 11 weeks gestation and involves
having a small fragment of the afterbirth sampled, or Amniocentesis,
performed after 16 weeks gestation, where a needle is inserted into
the womb and a sample of the fluid around your baby is removed.
The Consultant will discuss these tests with you in detail prior to
undertaking the procedure.

I have my pregnancy ultrasound scan performed at
