Lou Marsden. Senior Information Worker, Down's
Syndrome Scotland.
Diet, weight and exercise. The session is intended to provide
parents, carers and workers with the tools to aid information sharing
with the Child/Young person to help them maintain good physical health.
Julia Williamson. Speech and Language Therapist attached
to the Leicester Down's Syndrome Support Group.
Communicating through the
ages. The session will
look at specific language problems faced by children/young people with
Down's Syndrome and the ways in which adults can assist by encouraging
communication skills.
Fiona Yaron
- Field. Fiona works
as a freelance photographer and art psychotherapist. Her work focuses
on "the family"
The Language of Imagining. Everyday language is not the language
of the child, especially children with Down's Syndrome. The language
of the child is image, metaphor and story. The workshops will aim to
show that the communication spoken in the realm of the imagination offers
people a way to express, contain and reflect experience. The arts offer
opportunities to rehearse new ways of dealing with feelings and situations.
By passing cognitive thinking and entering into the image we are able
to speak with depth, subtleties and complexities about felt life. Each
workshop will be geared to the emotional developmental stage of the
age group. Delegates will be asked to participate. I hope the session
will give parents a creative resource for a richer communication with
their children.
Delegates will be asked to
select their age range of interest: 0 to 5 years; 5 to 11 years; 11
years and older, at the time of booking.
Delegates will have the opportunity
to attend all of the workshops detailed above. The sessions will be
tailored to the age range selected.
(For the purposes of organisation,
only one age range of interest can be selected).
Childcare.
It has been possible to organise
child care places at the "Pride Park Day Nursery" which is approximately
500 meters from the conference venue on Royal Scot Road, Victoria Centre,
Pride Park, Derby.
Full day care including lunch
will be provided from 9.30am to 5pm for a charge of £35 per child.
(NB There must be a minimum
of six children taking up places on the day for the Nursery to agree

have to withdraw the offer).
