'Access to Education
- a report on the barriers to education for children with Down's
syndrome' was published in May 2004, and presents the results
of a survey sent to all parent members with children aged from 3 to
19 years. It represents the educational experiences of the 1500 parents
who replied, and makes for some very interesting and at times quite
challenging reading. Link for Access to Education survey DSA:
<a href=http://www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/DSA_lstCampaigns.aspxhttp://www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/DSA_lstCampaigns.aspx
In the Spring/ summer there

of Transition from school to Further Education
- Diversity and Practice for young people with Down's syndrome
in the UK'. This analyses the transition experiences of families
with pupils leaving school and going into Further Education - this
area presents many challenges and is interesting reading.
Following on from the very
useful booklets and information sheets for parents and schools supporting
pupils with Down's syndrome, further information sheets are currently
in print on the following topics: Fine Motor Skills, Number Skills,
14+ Transitional Review, and Adolescence and sexuality.
These will supplement the existing information sheets on: The Early
Years- Starting School, Behaviour, Reading, Short term Auditory Memory,
Transition from Primary to Secondary Schools, Alternative accreditation
at Key Stage 4, Suitable Software for Under 7's
Single copies are free, extra copies are £1.50 each.

Top Tips
A really simple way to give
messages or record instructions - Talking Tins from <a href=http://www.talking/www.talking products.com. Cost 3 for £11.74.
These were originally designed for visually impaired people to enable
them to identify food tins. Inclusive Technology also supply packs of
3 with adaptors and straps to connect to any object at £14.Records
about 10 seconds of speech, rerecordable.
Similarly Voice Pad
does the same job - light and easy to hold from SEMERC or CAP Project
www.cap.becta.org.uk . Or Inclusive Technology Tel: 01457 819799.10
for £3. This small, thin pad allows you to record and play back a message
(up to 10 seconds). The self-adhesive pad on the back means it can act
as a talking label or as part of a display. It could record an instruction,
or it can be used to replace home/school book, or pupil can record a
message as an aide memoire or to check speech clarity. Many thanks to
Pete Dendle and Jon Stevens at Millford School, Plymouth and Celia Todd,
Clinical Lead SALT, Cornwall.
Talking Photo Album
from Liberator Tel: 01476 550391, <a href=http://www.liberator.co.uk/www.liberator.co.uk or www.curriculumonline.gov.uk. Re-
recordable strips at the bottom of each plastic insert. You can use
for photos, pictures, sequencing a story, All about Me books etc. Costs
£29 or 5 for £141 . Thanks to Jeanette Denham, Senior portage Worker,
South Devon and Jane Hancock, Chief Speech and Language Therapist, Exeter.
Do you have
any top tips - if so e-mail me and I'll include them in the next
newsletter.

Enabling Schemes
- Social Services:
Exciting new development- Social
Services are now employing 'Enablers' to be available to support
children with disabilities from 5 - 14 years in after school
activities eg Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Youth Club, After School
Clubs etc. They will support the child for a period of weeks to enable
the adults running the group to understand the special needs and it's
practical implications for the group, with gradual withdrawal as the
child becomes established and happy in the group.
